Artist Statement
Through photography, I explore the acts of seeing and recording, and the ways in which records exist.
Time Travel began in 1988 with the idea of constructing myself by recording what I saw. Initially, I photographed myself; gradually, my gaze turned towards the world before me. By arranging the photographs from each roll of film in the order they were taken, I sought to reveal myself not through a single likeness, but through the passage of time and what I had seen along the way.
In a Space, I work with the physical media that carry records. I seal hard disks, film, and tapes in epoxy resin, then photograph the resulting objects. The act of sealing is intended to protect the media, yet it also makes the records they contain inaccessible through their original means of retrieval. Faced with this contradiction, I ask what is being preserved.
As recording media become objects and then photographs, their states and meanings also change. The visual intensity created by the resin’s surfaces, cracks, reflections, and colours is also an important part of the work. Photography does more than convey the appearance of the sealed objects: it allows them to be encountered anew, at different scales and in different material forms.
I have also long been drawn to the daguerreotype, in which an image emerges amid the lustre and reflections of a silver plate. I am still exploring how to bring this interest into my work. My questions concern not only what is recorded, but also what carries a record, the state in which it remains, and how it is seen.
