Curatorial Note

My curatorial practice did not begin as a single, continuous plan.

While presenting and explaining the daguerreotype in Daguerre’s Night in 2022, visitors began asking about tintypes and ambrotypes, and then about early photographic processes more broadly. In response to those questions, I organized 1839.08.19. The Story of the Invention of Photography. Later, questions about paper prints and the broader development of nineteenth-century photography led to Chronicles Written with Light.

Whenever possible, I try to explain photography through actual objects and processes. I have made daguerreotypes myself, worked with tintypes and ambrotypes,  I have also used 3D printing to construct a camera obscura through which viewers can observe projected images and draw them by hand.  These experiences have led me to understand the history of photography not simply as a chronology or a body of knowledge, but as a history of materials, technologies, and processes that once physically operated.

I am sometimes asked why I present exhibitions like these outside Seoul, or why I begin them in regional cities. My response is simple: Why shouldn’t they begin there?

I do not believe that opportunities to encounter the history of photography and original photographic objects should remain confined to particular places or to a limited group of people. The starting point of these exhibitions is my wish to share, through publicly accessible exhibitions, the materials and experiences I have accumulated over time.
