Exhibition Note, 2021

Thank You, Daguerre was an exhibition exploring the material and visual properties of the daguerreotype through the process of making it by hand.

I first encountered the daguerreotype in Japan in the early 1990s. The peculiar way an image appeared and disappeared within the lustre and reflections of the silver plate left a lasting impression on me.

I began experimenting with the daguerreotype process myself in 2012. Most of the early attempts failed, and it was in 2013 that I produced my first successful images. Through repeated processes of polishing the silver plate, sensitising it, exposing, developing, fixing, and gilding it, I sought to experience not only the resulting image but also the material and physical processes through which it came into being.

For Thank You, Daguerre, I produced daguerreotypes of subjects I had personally selected, including a horse, a crucible, basil, a wall, a clock, and a chair. The exhibition environment was also arranged so that viewers could experience the particular nature of the daguerreotype, whose image changes according to light, reflection, and the position of the viewer.

The exhibition was not an attempt simply to revive a historical photographic process. Rather, it was a way of examining how an image exists and becomes visible on the physical surface of a silver plate.

This text has been adapted from materials and working notes related to the 2021 exhibition Thank You, Daguerre.

Current Note, 2026

My interest in and experimentation with the daguerreotype continues, but I do not yet regard it as a completed body of work.

What interests me in the daguerreotype is not only its historical significance as an early photographic process. In a daguerreotype, the image does not exist separately from its physical support. A single silver plate is itself a single image. Rather than being a reproduced print, it exists as a unique material image whose appearance changes with light and with the viewer’s position.

This quality has the potential to connect with my long-standing interest in the relationship between records and the media that carry them. In a Space, records are contained within machine-recorded media, yet the act of sealing the medium in order to preserve it makes those records inaccessible. In the daguerreotype, by contrast, the recorded image and the material that carries it exist as one from the outset.

I am still exploring the relationship between these two conditions. I have not yet determined what position the daguerreotype will ultimately occupy within my work. What remains, however, is the question of how an image, a record, and the physical medium that carries it relate to one another.
